    Dark warning on power blackouts

June 9, 2023 - By Colin Packham; Nick Evans

Origin Energy's Eraring coal-fired power station in NSW is the largest of its kind in Australia, but could be ceasing operations up to seven years early in 2025. Energy Edge MD Josh Stabler says the closure of Eraring will cause the biggest strain on the system in winter 2026, which will be the first peak demand period that Australia will face without the nation's largest coal power plant. He says it would be preferable to delay the closure of Eraring until Snowy 2.0 is ready, but Snowy 2.0 is currently not due to start operating until 2029. It is possible that the NSW government will strike a so-called closure contract to keep Eraring open, and Stabler claims such an option was the most likely.
