In today's rapidly evolving energy landscape, the sector faces challenges and opportunities that bear resemblances to the digital disruption experienced by various industries during the rise of the Internet era. As the push for grid modernization and decarbonization becomes paramount, the energy industry stands at the cusp of a transformation as monumental as the rise of eCommerce in reshaping business paradigms. The parallels between the challenges posed by grid modernization and the disruptive potential of the Internet aren't lost to the visionaries of the sector.
As part of our commitment to bring the voices of industry experts to the forefront with our Network of Experts, Energy Central’s Power Perspectives™ "Welcome Your New Expert Interview Series" is proud to introduce Jason Price as the latest expert in our Utility Management Group. While a recognized name to many due to his role as the host of our very own Energy Central Power Perspectives Podcast, Jason's unconventional journey from the hospitality industry to becoming a director with West Monroe in the Energy & Utilities practice is a testament to the diverse perspectives shaping the future of energy. As Jason notes inthis conversation:
"The energy field is undoubtedly far more complex and risk averse in a highly regulated environment. As a natural monopoly, the utilities have a defined market share and are mandated to deliver reliable, safe, and low cost power. The hospitality industry is hypercompetitive fighting for market share and practically uninhibited on how it goes about selling its perishable inventory each day. The industry has many remarkable and equally talented and devoted people and was proud to deliver technology to make hotels operate more efficiently and profitably. Keep in mind, hospitality is all about the customer. Not always the case for utilities given its monopolistic position. Hotels were early adopters of new business models, technology, and marketing practices – quite the opposite for utilities. I had a learning curve to overcome to understand the how and why. Fortunately I am surrounded by really smart people at West Monroe and the Energy Central community to help me understand the drive to change the bi-directional relationship that has existed between the customer and the utility for over a century."
