September 26 (Renewables Now) - The World Bank on Monday announced a partnership with a consortium of Brazil’s nine northeastern states to promote the development of the Northeast region including in terms of solar power generation and low-carbon hydrogen production.
Under the terms of a newly signed memorandum of understanding (MoU), the World Bank and the Interstate Consortium for the Sustainable Development of the Northeast will focus on developing financial mechanisms for future low-carbon hydrogen projects, exploring possible opportunities for solar energy, water and sanitation projects, and promoting the exchange of experiences, knowledge and financing of digital public infrastructure.
“This MoU that we are signing today reflects our firm commitment to cooperate for the development of the northeastern Brazilian states in four key areas: energy transition, mainly the development of green hydrogen and offshore wind generation; community engagement; preservation of the Caatinga; and digital development,” said Johannes Zutt, World Bank director for Brazil.
The consortium in question is formed by the state governments of Alagoas, Bahia, Ceara, Maranhao, Paraiba, Pernambuco, Piaui, Rio Grande do Norte and Sergipe.
