Orsted Launches Sunflower Wind Farm, Pioneering Sustainable Energy in Kansas

September 29 -- Orsted, a prominent U.S. renewable energy enterprise, has marked a significant milestone as it commenced operations for Sunflower Wind in Marion County, Kansas.

Sunflower Wind is anticipated to inject tens of millions of dollars in property tax revenue over the next thirty years. These funds will be vital in bolstering local infrastructure, schools, and emergency services, all without imposing an additional burden on local taxpayers.

In an effort to minimize light pollution for residents, the wind power development project will incorporate an innovative Aircraft Detection Lighting System. This system ensures that the nighttime lights on the turbines blink only when aircraft are detected, contributing to a more environmentally conscious and community-friendly operation, Orsted said.

David Hardy, Group EVP, and CEO Americas at Orsted, expressed his enthusiasm regarding this achievement and the company’s inaugural clean energy initiative in Kansas. He stated, “With Sunflower Wind, we now have 13 operational wind farms in the U.S., generating 832 MW in the Southwest Power Pool.”

Orsted has already bundled renewable energy credits from Sunflower Wind and forged Power Purchase Agreements with leading companies such as Amcor, PepsiCo, Stryker, Citizens, and Walmart’s Project Gigaton Cohort. These partnerships signify a collective commitment towards sustainable energy solutions.

Moreover, Orsted, in collaboration with The Conservation Fund, is championing voluntary land conservation efforts covering up to 3,000 acres within the Flint Hills in central Kansas. Additionally, strategic partnerships with The Kansas Chapter of The Nature Conservancy (TNC) are being pursued to further restore and conserve lands under easements.

In a significant boost to the local economy, Orsted has injected $13 million through procurement from local businesses for equipment, materials, and supplies. Further strengthening their commitment to the community, Orsted has invested $3 million in permanent infrastructure improvements for Marion County, including essential upgrades to public roads.

Looking ahead, Orsted remains steadfast in its dedication to sustainable energy, with nearly 6 GW of onshore renewable energy capacity currently operational or under construction. The company has set an ambitious target of achieving 17.5 GW of global onshore renewable energy capacity by the end of this decade.
