With freeze coming, ERCOT expects sufficient generation to meet forecasted demand

The Dallas Morning News

With North Texas under a winter storm warning until Wednesday, residents are facing a number of byproducts to the weather, including icy roads, flight cancellations and school closures.

Another thing residents need to keep in mind, particularly in the wake of state-wide power outages in February 2021, is the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, or ERCOT, which manages most of the state’s electricity grid.

“ERCOT is monitoring weather conditions and expects sufficient generation to meet forecasted demand,” ERCOT tweeted on Monday afternoon.

Since those 2021 outages, ERCOT, which operates separately from other states, has been under intense pressure to improve grid reliability, as population booms and renewables change the energy game. ERCOT, with headquarters in Taylor, is overseen by the Public Utility Commission.

The Dallas Morning News also has an ERCOT hub where you can monitor the Texas electricity supply and demand, current grid conditions and real-time prices in terms of dollars per megawatt hours. You can view those dashboards at dallasnews.com/ercot.
