Construction of S Africa’s 84-MW Wolf Wind project kicks off

March 29 (Renewables Now) - German renewables developer Juwi AG said on Wednesday that it has kicked off the construction of the 84-MW Wolf Wind project in Eastern Cape, South Africa after it reached financial close. The planned wind farm is being developed for independent power producer (IPP) Red Rocket. It is expected to be connected to the South African grid by the first quarter of 2024 and generate more than 360 GWh of electricity per year. Red Rocket won the project in the fifth tender round as part of the South African government’s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Procurement Programme (REI4P). Wolf Wind is the second wind project developed by Juwi to reach financial close under the REI4P, following the 138-MW Garob Wind project which reached commercial operation in 2021. In addition to Wolf Wind, Red Rocket was also awarded two other wind farms in the same tender round -- the Brandvalley and the Rietkloof projects. The South African IPP firm earlier this year picked Danish wind turbine maker Vestas to supply turbines for the parks.
