US DoE to provide USD 60m for clean hydrogen tech, grid improvements

    May 23 (Renewables Now) - The US Department of Energy (DoE) on Monday announced the availability of USD 60 million (EUR 55.6m) in financing to support advancements in clean hydrogen technologies and improvements of the electric power grid.

    The DoE listed 22 projects that will enter into negotiations to secure a share of almost USD 42 million in total financing. The selected projects are bundled into four different topics as shown in the table below.

    4. M2FCT- High Performing, Durable, Low-PGM Catalysts and Membrane Electrode Assemblies for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Applications 9m

    More information about each individual project can be found on the website of the Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO), which will manage the projects.

    In addition, DoE unveiled the availability of USD 17.8 million in financing for a fifth topic that involves the creation of a North American university research consortium to assist states and Tribal communities in the development of the data, modeling tools, workforce and methods required to implement grid resiliency programmes. The consortium will be set up by Stanford University and will involve universities in Mexico and Canada, including seven Minority Serving Institutions.

    “Today’s investments are a bold step in addressing some of our hardest to decarbonize sectors — heavy transportation and industry — by working directly with states and tribes to make hydrogen an available clean energy source,” commented US Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm.
