Volume of gas production in Kyrgyzstan jumps up

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 25. The volume of natural gas and liquefied gas (LNG) production in Kyrgyzstan amounted to 11.7 million cubic meters from January through April 2023, Trend reports. As Kyrgyzstan’s statistical data show, the output records a 17-percent growth compared to the 10 million cubic meters of gas produced in the same timeframe in 2022. Nevertheless, the volume of gas produced in Kyrgyzstan in April 2023 decreased by 20 percent year-on-year – from 2.5 million cubic meters down to 2 million cubic meters. In February this year, the deputy general director of the Gazprom branch in Kyrgyzstan said that it is necessary to develop gas fields in the southern part of the country, to reduce the dependence of these regions on gas from Uzbekistan. He noted that Kyrgyzstan has its own confirmed gas fields with nearly 4 or 4.5 billion cubic meters of gas. These volumes will be enough to supply the south of Kyrgyzstan for about 80–90 years. The main concern on the issue is caused by the fact that the southern regions of Kyrgyzstan are predominantly provided by the gas imported from Uzbekistan. The government of Uzbekistan is raising the issue of banning gas exports abroad more and more often, which in turn poses a risk to the southern regions of Kyrgyzstan and prompts them to seek alternative supply options.
